Hi Steven

The agency has sent over the designs for the First Run and What's New pages. I'm going to file a separate bug for each, even though they share much of the design elements.

We have two iterations of the design, with a different presentation of the Personas gallery for purposes of A/B testing.

* One version has a simple thumbnail gallery
* The other includes the same thumbnails, though re-sized, with a chrome mockup for a more direct way of communicating what the feature is about.

The copy still needs to be massaged and slightly tweaked. But we're ready to start building this, with the goal of handing off for QA / L10n on Oct 15th, if not sooner.

Part of my goal was to pull all the content above the fold. But I think we're a few pixels short of that :) As you're laying out the design... *if* you are able to pull the content above the fold, that would be great. Otherwise, no worries.

Files can be downloaded here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/r5a151
I'll also send them via email just in case. Source files are too big to attach, but I have attached the screenshots for reference.

Thanks!

One other thing I should note... in the PSD files you will see a layer with a white chrome. The intention of that layer, is to allow the mockup to be dynamic, so that we can slide in other designs if necessary. A dynamic mockup wasn't in the original spec for the FR or WN pages, but we'll have that on other mozilla.com pages, so, they've simply included it here - and given us greater flexibility to feature different designs on the mockup.

I haven't played with the PSD file to see if that is indeed how the white chrome layer is working, but that was the intention. Hope that helps, and happy to clarify further if necessary.
Attached I have the revised copy for this page, which includes a new line saying "Try these on!" on top of the thumbnail gallery, or somewhere nearby to indicate that the thumbnails are points of engagement, and not just static graphics. I've also asked the agency to provide a simple directional graphic (probably an arrow) to draw attention to the thumbnails and more clearly communicate what they're there for. This will likely change the page layout a bit (sorry about that), but I hope to keep this low impact. It will however help to make the gallery presentation stronger, and the feature, more clear.

Thanks.

This firstrun page for 3.6 is now setup in the 3.6 branch.

The page can be previewed here: https://www-3.6.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6/firstrun

The persona previews are just static for now. Tara, can you get me in touch with someone who could let me know what's involved in live-previewing the personas? Also, will we be able to load the preview images from getpersonas.com, or will that kill their site?

The mockup calls for the persona preview images to be 41px tall by 122px wide. Is this a standard preview size for the personas?
(Steven, don't worry: GetPersonas.com will soon likely be moving to a CDN.)
I put together a wiki with instructions on how to add persona preview functionality here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Personas/Previewing_Code

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks Ryan. Steven, I didn't have a standard preview size for the thumbnails to go by. Key thing was to show a small, yet representative sample of designs, sized to fit the page layout, and cropped to focus on the right corner of the Persona design. Not too big, not too small. With that said, I'm open to your recommendations on tweaking the aspect ratio if necessary.

I'll be providing the actual designs very soon. And Morgamic recommended pre-caching the designs so that we don't overload and slow down the experience.

Also, Steven I saw the page on stage. Looking great. Do you also have the second version of the page staged for viewing? We have two version for purposes of testing.

Thanks.

Fixed in r53519. Thanks.

One other note, per Catherine Brady: we need to update the footer so it contains the Creative Commons info that's currently on the live mozilla.com.

(this applies universally to all the 3.6 pages)
Include the stage version of the personas iframe in r54063.
As with the What's New page:

[1] 4 validation errors
[2] "Firefox 3.6 Features" points to http://www-3.6.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/, but shouldn't it point to http://www-3.6.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features?

> http://www-3.6.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/, but shouldn't it point to
> http://www-3.6.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features?

thanks Stephen...as with the What's New page, the answer is yes.
Two other small copy tweaks here (this is for consistency with terminology we use elsewhere)...

Headline:

Old version -
What will your browser wear today?

New version -
What will your Firefox wear today?

Little text at the bottom:

Old version-
Choose from the gallery of over 25,000 other designs

New version-
Choose from the gallery of over 25,000 other Personas

Thanks!
Two issues:
1. Hovering over the bigger persona image (image with fish) to the left of 'try
these on' block gives the effect of /persona/33
2. /persona/2635 (firefox logo on fire) appears twice in the 'Try these on'
block
Nit-pick:

In https://www-3.6.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6/firstrun/?variation=2

"Try these on!" needs to be left aligned with the first paragraph under the heading-"Personas: What Will Your Browser Wear Today?"

see screenshot:http://screencast.com/t/fFnhPzRX
Validation issues fixed in r54098 (iframe can't be used in XHTML strict, so we
have to go with XHTML transitional for these pages)

Features link fixed in r54099.

Text edits from comment #14 fixed in r54102.

Note that all three of these fixes also apply to the whatsnew page (bug
521532).

The alignment issue from comment #20 is fixed for both firstrun and whatsnew pages in r54104 (good catch, and thanks for the screenshot).
Thanks Steven! I'm reassigning this to the QA team...

We still need to update the featured persona images, which is in the works, but otherwise this page is feeling pretty solid.

Steven: can you take a look at comment 19 (for both this page and What's New?) I know we're still waiting on the final set of Personas, but it's weird that hovering over the main Persona previews a different one.

The contents of the iframe live on getpersonas.com (or will when they are pushed to production). Ryan, can you look at that issue? (I don't have permissions to edit the getpersonas.com pages)
Hi guys

Per recent conversations with Cbeard, John Lilly, et al... we'll be making some minor, yet important, tweaks to the design of the FR and WN pages. The general concept will remain the same, but the design layout and copy will be shifting.

So, until I have more details on that, I wanted to ask if you can please hold off on any major QA or dev work on these pages. General issues, like the iframes, would still apply even to the new layout, but I want to make sure you don't have to duplicate your efforts with the upcoming changes.

Thanks again for everyone's help so far. I'll update the appropriate bugs with new information as soon as I can. Thanks.
Do you have news about what will happen with these pages? We have to localize them for all of our locales and find fallback alternatives if we can't have the pages done in time for all locales. Thanks

Pretty much what Tara said in comment #25 still applies - we're updating these pages per some direction from the steering committee. We're pushing to get them back into the queue as soon as possible...will keep you posted when I know more.
Hi guys, the new designs for the FR/WN pages are here! We were able to get a lot done in a relatively short amount of time (thanks to Sean), and the new version looks great. Thanks for your patience while we worked through this.

Steven, please follow this link to download the new PSD file: http://www.sendspace.com/file/75rixc

As you can see, the basic structure hasn't changed *too* much: There's a larger space allocated to the featured promo on the left, with two stacked on the right. But there are some significant differences that may require you to start from scratch. Let me know how long you think it might take you to build this, and if there's anything I can do to help. This should be a top priority.

Few additional thoughts to guide you in the implementation:
* The browser mockups fanned on the bottom left, should call a live preview on roll-over, and also a click action linking to the Personas gallery.
* For the Twitter button, our official page is here: http://twitter.com/firefox
* For Facebook, our official fan page is here: http://www.facebook.com/Firefox
* For the mailing list, I'll have to get back to you.
* The Add-ons link should be the same as before.
* The "mozilla mission" link at the top, is the same as before.
* "More Firefox 3.6 Features" at the bottom, goes to the features page.
* "Firefox Support", goes to the SUMO page.

Questions:
* For Facebook, I know that you can create a badge that allows you to just become a fan with one click (without even leaving the page), do you know more about this? and other options we might have? I have the same question with Twitter. Will do some research today, but if you happen to know more about this, please let me know.

Designs:
I'll also follow-up shortly with the final batch of designs.

Timing:
As mentioned above, this should be a top priority. Would be great if we can have this built and handed off to QA by EOW. Let me know what you think.

Thanks again!

Sorry, by "mailing list" I meant blog :) That used to be a different link.

Thanks.
Hey Steven. Few quick changes:

* Text saying "Visit us on Facebook", should instead say "Become a Fan on Facebook"
* Please also reduce the length of the Personas button linking to the gallery at the bottom, to about the same length as the others. And align it to the right, please.

Thank you.
Attached image Screenshot of ugly fonts in Windows XP (obsolete) —
The initial version of this redesign has been checked in for the first-run page in the 3.6 branch in r55166.

A few notes:
* The page must be reviewed in 3.6 - it uses the new WOFF
* The actual persona previews (the iframe) aren't there yet.
* The buttons don't have a hover effect yet, but they probably should have something subtle.
* The twitter/facebook links are static for now - we'll see if we can do any better than that
* in Windows XP when the system font-smoothing option is set to "Standard" (as opposed to None or Cleartype), the fonts look REALLY bad. Screenshot attached. Anyone know if there's anything we can do about that? Or how common that setting is?
Forgot to mention, a few of the uppercase-letters in the Meta font aren't displaying properly (the Y in "Choose Your Persona" and the R in "Read our Blog") - they appear to be falling back on the default serif font. I think the woff font files I'm using may be a sub-set. Will have to investigate.
(In reply to comment #32)
> * The actual persona previews (the iframe) aren't there yet.

I can get the new design for the iframe in prod by Tuesday of next week (11/10)
Thanks Ryan. Does that mean that QA would have to wait till then? If so, is there any way we can expedite this?

If the browser mockups fanned in the bottom left don't require the live preview / iframe setup, will that make this any faster? I remember you mentioning that it required a production push last time. So, perhaps we can simplify and make that a click-able object only, pointing to the gallery. Please let me know, Thanks.
Also, will the new iframe design be used for the get personal and customization page?

QA could start on other parts of the page, it's up to you guys and QA to decide that.

> If the browser mockups fanned in the bottom left don't require the live preview
> / iframe setup, will that make this any faster?

That part will not be hosted by getpersonas.com
Ryan, I was thinking that we could keep the current iframe contents you have setup for the Get Personal and Customization pages, and setup a new page for the updated firstrun/whatsnew page. I'm assuming the A/B alternates are off the table for now?

If I got you a page today, would you be able to get it setup soon?
Yeah, I can create a new page for the firstrun/whatsnew (assuming the same design for both pages?)

I can probably get it on stage by tmrw, then it will have to be pushed to production during a normal maintenance window (Tues & Thurs nights).
(In reply to comment #36)
> Also, will the new iframe design be used for the get personal and customization
> page?

If by iframe design you're referring to the fanned Personas in the bottom left corner, then, no. The Get Personal and Customization pages will maintain the same designs they have now. And for the FR/WN pages, we don't have to set up an iframe for those. Instead, we can make that image clickable and point to the Personas gallery. Just reiterating that in an effort to save time. Our CTA is pointing to the thumbnails anyway, so, there's no need to make the mockups more complex.
(In reply to comment #38)
> I'm assuming the A/B alternates are off the table for now?

Yes. A/B testing isn't off the table, but we've worked out a separate testing plan with the metrics team. So, the previous variations we had created no longer apply.

(In reply to comment #39)
> Yeah, I can create a new page for the firstrun/whatsnew (assuming the same
> design for both pages?)

Yes. With the exception of minor change to the copy. These pages share all design elements.
Just chatted with Tara via IM and wanted to clarify - the fan-of-screenshots element is static and will not be included in the iframe (it's already part of the page as a background image).

The six rectangular preview will be in an iframe, much as they were in the previous design.

Ryan, as with the iframe in the previous design, this version should have a transparent page background as the background is provided by the parent page. The iframe really only needs to provide border/shadow/column-layout for the previews. Since these pages 3.6-only, we can even use -moz-box-shadow. Can you handle that setup, or do you want me to work on the CSS?

With some help from font geniuses, some of the rendering ugliness in XP has been traced to the OTF version of the font used in the WOFF files. I've updated the page with a TrueType version of the fonts for now (r55205). This helps a bit.

Also, if I bump up the font sizes, there's a threshhold above which XP does a better job of smoothing the font. I've adjusted the sizes accordingly (also in r55205). Unfortunately, the fonts look a touch big in all platforms now, but I don't think it's too bad. They look much better in XP now (screenshot attached).
Attachment #410501 - Attachment is obsolete: true
Sweet! Thanks Ryan.
The designs on these pages will be the same as the other pages on Mozilla.com. Which are:

1. Japanese Tattoo - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/7610
2. Endless Possibilities - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/30987
3. Retro Notes - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/32757
4. Harry Potter - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/35081
5. Bob Marley - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/44136
6. Sunset Over Water - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/64769

Please pull these in when you can. Also, I'm experiencing the same bug as what I noted on the Customization page - which is that when I roll outside the thumbnails, I see Sean's nifty animated clouds Persona. And it actually sticks when I move to another tab. As much as I love these wafting clouds... we should probably make sure they go away :)

Thanks again.
Also... Steven, I've seen the current version of the page on stage and it's looking great. I know you may still be tweaking, but I just want to make sure that the fanned Personas in the bottom left have a static link pointing to the GetPersonas gallery. Thank you.
(In reply to comment #45)
> iframe is up at
> http://sm-personas01.mozilla.org/en-US/external/mozilla/firstrun.php

Great - thanks. Can you make the HTML element transparent as well as the body?

We've got:
 body { background: transparent; }

Please add:
html, body { background: transparent; }
Okay, two quick things:

1.) Seems like the animated persona that I'm seeing on the white space is a potential conflict between the Personas add-on, and the in-product feature. I've filed a separate bug to tackle that: (Bug #526891). It won't delay this page, but we'll have to make sure it's fixed for 3.6, as it'll impact the user experience on a variety of mozilla.com pages, including this one.

2.) I'm not seeing the drop down confirmation bar when I click on a thumbnail. Assuming it hadn't landed in beta, but I know it's in the latest nightly. The problem I'm seeing is that sine we're redirecting people to the GetPersonas gallery, the drop down confirmation barely appears. It's set to go away when you change screens. So, that's a problem we'll have to fix. Ryan is going to file the bug.
The updated iframe has been added to this page in r55229. It still has a white background for now (see comment #48), but it's working well other than that. The page is getting close to complete.
(In reply to comment #48)
> Please add:
> html, body { background: transparent; }

r55244
Also, as before, the iframe is on stage, which doesn't have all the personas as production, so until this is pushed live, the personas won't match with what we want.
One small thing: The arrow on the green button is the blue arrow. There should
be a green arrow in the PSD.

Thanks!
(In reply to comment #53)
> One small thing: The arrow on the green button is the blue arrow. There should
> be a green arrow in the PSD.

Good catch - I might try to make the arrows a transparent grey so we can use one image on both button colors (and it could pickup the color below if via alpha transparency).

Sean, let me know if you notice anything amiss on the page. The bottom of the two boxes don't quite line up all time time (depends on system font settings). I'll try to make that a little more robust.

Also, as I mentioned, I made the small fonts a bit larger as it dramatically improves the rendering on Windows XP (without ClearType), but only moderately deteriorates the design for everyone else. Let me know if you think this is a reasonable compromise.
Tara, you had requested that the fanned Personas in the bottom left link to the gallery. I'd suggest we not link these, and treat them as a more decorative element. The click-able elements on the page are clearly delineated with button-styles or underlines.

Feel free to over-rule me on that.

Also, as Ryan commented, the white-background is gone from the iframe. Looking good.

I see your point, but I'm going to overrule you on that. It's ok if it doesn't look clickable like the other elements, but we'd prefer that it be clickable just in case.

Thanks!

Overruled! This is done in r55256. I linked it to http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/gallery/ - should the "See all 30,000+" link point to the gallery as well, or stay pointing to the getpersonas.com home page?
I'm bummed I wasn't around to overrule comment #55. I agree with John.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of people play with that space, actually, and try to click. It would be interesting to do a heat analysis on this page to see just how many people clicked on it. Regardless, there's no harm in allowing that to link over to the gallery.

Regarding Comment #57. The "See all 30,000+" link should point to the gallery as well, please, not the home page.

Thank you!

Done in r55262.
We're not using WOFF fonts (about 50% smaller download size) as of r55296. We also fall-back on TrueType for Firefox 3.5 (not that many will see this page).
(In reply to comment #53)

Fixed in r55313.

Also, the bottom of the boxes should be lining up as of r55307.
I think this page is ready for QA now. Am I missing anything obvious?
Looks great to me! Thank you so much Steven, Ryan, Sean, et al.

I'm experiencing some issues with how the Personas are applying though. They don't seem to stick permanently with one click. I'm redirected to the design detail page on GetPersonas.com, but if I hover over the design, my Persona changes back to the original. And of course, I never see the drop down confirmation bar.

With respect to the click-to apply issue... I've tried it with both the Personas add-on installed (and enabled), and uninstalled. Would that be a separate bug, or require more hacking on this page before QA?

If it's separate, I'll gladly mark this as Fixed and hand it off. But please let me know what you think, and if you're experiencing the same thing.
Also, I'm on the latest nightly. Not the beta.
OK. Going ahead and marking as *Fixed*. We'll tackle and squish these bugs along the way as we QA.

Thanks all!

Personas don't stick, or display properly
Reopening for a few issues.

There is text in this page that is not displayed:

<a id="personas-image-link" href="http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/gallery/">View Personas Gallery</a>

and the css for that text does font-size:1px;

It looks like the only purpose is to position an image, if that's the reason we should have an image tag if we want to keep a link, no need to ask people to translate a string that we are going to hide. FWIW, I agree with comment #55. You can keep the link with an image tag but I would prefer it to not have a l10n impact :)

I wanted to avoid adding another image (and HTTP request to the page since it is already integrated into the background image for the entire box). I figured the text in this link is just link ALT text in a linked IMG tag.
Re: that linked image (originally referred to in comment #55), we'd definitely prefer that it be linked. But, if it has a major l10n impact then I could certainly be convinced otherwise.

Pascal, is the solution from comment #69 ok?
an image tag with an alt attribute would be fine, yes
My comment #69 had a typo, I was suggesting that a background image with a link with hidden text (as we have now) is essentially the same (from a localization perspective) as a traditional image tag with ALT text.
Except that an img with an alt text serves a semantic purpose that can be explained to localizers. The problem with the current situation is that I expect some localizers to ask me why we hide the string they translated :)
(In reply to comment #73)

Fair enough. I'm hesitant to change the CSS/HTML/images on this page this late in the process (post QA). Would it be sufficient to remove the text from the link and just have an empty link?

It would behave/look exactly as it does now, but there would be no string to translate. Visitors with accessibility issues would still have the clear "View all 30,000+" link which points to the same place.
How about just putting "Personas" as the text link?

I'm sorry to throw this into the mix at such a late stage, but we'd like to add one more text link to this page. The link should read "What are Personas?" and can go right under the thumbnails (probably right-justified).

The link should point to http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/getting_started (which is currently 404, but will be live before 3.6). The background is that we're putting together a new Personas overview video that will reside on this page.

Important note: I'm not sure what the l10n status of the First Run page is, but I'm ok with leaving this new text off the localized versions (since the GetPersonas.com Getting Started page won't be localized as far as I know).

The "What are Personas?" link has been added to the firstrun/whatsnew pages in r56093.

The style is pretty basic - feedback is welcome. Any further style changes would hopefully be CSS-only, so shouldn't affect localization.
Thanks Steven. My only thought is that it might be a little big...could we try it at the same size as "Firefox Support"? It's definitely a secondary element of the page...doesn't need to call too much attention to itself.
